MMORPGs are very popular now a days with the aspect of you being the character and creating such a person to wander worlds and be as one is called a "Second Life." However getting a decent one is not always easy:

Main MMORPGs that I know:
WoW - World of Warcraft - [Pay] - [Raiting: *****] Featuring a game by one of the top designers in the world, Blizzard, gives a fantasy aspect to the world of MMORPGs with two sides from my understanding and a massive world [However not too massive] where quests and fun findings are endless!

Second Life - [Pay/Not Pay] - [Raiting: ***] It's what it says a second life, and if I'm not mistaken you don't HAVE to pay, but paying gets you items in game that you can work with to build up your character. It's a decent from my few lookings at it, and really if you want to try something that you may want to do in your life in the future you can give it a show. Anywhere from journalism to marketing! You name it I'm sure it's there.

Runescape - [Pay/Not Pay] - [Raiting: ****] Fantasy again with the aspect of quests and items to claim as your own and show off your skills. The game appears really fun at the beginning but without a membership you cannot get the awesome items! Granted though it is pretty nifty and fun to just do one thing and act as though it's your profession. Many seem to do this.

Fiesta - [Free?] - [In Closed Beta] Outspark.com has created a new game known as Fiesta. Along with devloping of games, Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, and other Asian background companies are coming out with games. [Examples are netmarble.com and hangame.com - Some which are showing up at ijji.com for North American people.] which user get a free game with no costs! Catches to these though are typically if you want an awesome set of clothes or something else you have to purchase some online money and pay for them. Usually they're only $2 - $10 so like purchasing a little pieces of a game, does beat paying a payment if you don't want to and just want to enjoy. Fiesta is in closed Beta and with these aspects it could be one of these types of games, Free to play with LOADS of things to do, and with just special items you could get for paying.
